Series name: Parasol Protectorate
Canon notes: From between book three "Blameless" and book four "Heartless"
Species: vampire
History:
Not much personally is known about Lord Akeldama's life before ending up in London, specifics being lost to time or his unwillingness to share them without a few bottles of champagne.
What has been garnered though are as follows:
He was born Alexander the Great, military leader and King of Macedonia. Around June 323 BC, based on Pultarch's account, Alexander developed a fever at 32 years old and the real world history accounts that he died. This was actually when he was metamorphosed. It is implied that the one who metamorphosed him was Matakara (human name Hatshepsut) - Alexia asks Akeldama about this but he neither confirms nor denies it.
This would have put Lord Akeldama as a larva (a newly metamorphosed vampire) in the Alexandria Hive of Egypt as Matakara was the queen and only queens (female vampires) can turn new vampires.
If we assume this was Lord Akeldama's only hive since Matakara is still "alive" at the time of Parasol Protectorate series, he became tired of the hive telling him what to do. As such he became a rove (a hiveless vampire). He states as much when he tells Professor Lyall "I am a rove so that I might make my own decisions: who to love, who to watch, and most importantly, what to wear." This likely happened after many a hundreds of years of life because it takes great power and mental strength for a vampire to break away from security of a hive and be able to leave their designated territory.
How he ended up in England is up for debate. Was he forced so far our of Alexandria's territory that it was really his only option before establishing his "territory"? Did he set up roots somewhere and was forced to swarm (a state of panic in vampires where they are forced to leave their territory - a lot of bee references right?)?
Whatever the case, he eventually ended up in England around the area that would be London. He arrived what must have been - for him - fashionably early as he can with the aforementioned several bottles of champagne, talk about the dark days for supernaturals when they were hunted by what would eventually be called preternaturals, also known as soulless or soul-suckers by the vampires. These individuals have the ability to turn vampires and werewolves mortal with their touch and thus able to be killed. It was a time of skulking and hiding in the shadows to stay alive.
However, this means he was around when Queen Elizabeth officially integrated vampires, werewolves, and ghosts into society, the oldest and most powerful receiving titles and potentially landed positions, as mentioned about the dewan (a werewolf on the government's Shadow Council) being the "Earl of Upper Slaughter", but no longer having the land to go with the title.
He must have been in the area of London at the time since all supernaturals were required to be registered with the resulting bureau to manage them and Lord Akeldama did so willingly and early, given that he is "Subject V-322-XA" with the Bureau of Unnatural Registry (BUR) - V for Vampire, registration number, then X either because its his first initial or because he refused to give one and A for Akeldama. By comparison, Lord Maccon - Biffy and Lyall's former Alpha - was "Subject W-57790-CM" and was only in his 200 years at the start of the Parasol Protectorate.
Now with the safety and security of the government against being hunted, Lord Akeldama set up shop. He developed himself into something of a fashion icon as most vampires were want to do - most fashion trends apparently being set by well-to-do vampires. However, his tastes remained old fashioned and thus eccentric. As Lord Akeldama himself said when Alexia called his "humble" abode Rococo:
Isn't it just? I am afraid I never quite left that particular era. It was such a glorious time to be alive, when men finally and truly got to wear sparkly things, and there was lace and velvet everywhere.
He also developed what must be England's largest private spy network, via his many drones (mortals who are attached to a vampire rove or hive to seek patronage and possibly hoping their master or mistress will select them to receive the bite for a chance to be a vampire) and their associates. It was revealed during the Finishing School series that a young lady named Agatha Woosmoss, attending Mademoiselle Geraldine’s Finishing Academy for Young Ladies of Quality was actually having her education funded by Lord Akeldama. In return, she relayed information back to him. He even promised to keep giving her money after school as long as she kept sending him information. He was also the patron of Preshea Buss and courted Sophronia Temminnick in attempt to be her patron.
Following the death of Alessandro Tarabotti, Lord Akeldama hired his valet, Floote, to be his butler for a time. He had also thrown a dinner party for people he was interested in - either professionally or otherwise, with some of his drones putting on a play as one drone fancied themselves a playwright. The guest list included Sophronia - who he was courting to be a spy for him - and Professor Randolph Lyall the beta (the second in charge of a werewolf pack) of the Woolsey Pack. Though the question may now be placed of Lyall's invitation - was this a professional invitation?
In the end he took in Sophronia and her partner "Soap" in exchange for information. Perhaps not a surprising coincidence, Sophronia was hired by the dewan to pose as a nanny for Alexia Tarabotti, the first preternatural female in YEARS, to protect her. It was also around this time that Floote was hired to be a butler for Alexia's family, in part to protect her. This was the same Alexia Tarabotti that Lord Akeldama met prior to the events of the Parasol Protectorate series, though he claimed he was unaware of her preternatural state at first meeting. This may have been more being unaware of her appearance as she had been a spinster at the time of being born than her status.
He was also responsible for hiring Lady Preshea Villentia (né Buss). The Duke of Snodgrove wanted her there in attempt to break up his daughter's engagement to a certain gentleman. Lord Akeldama wanted her to stop the assassination attempt of the Duke of Snodgrove. She wanted the information Lord Akeldama had that would allow her to destroy her father's business, which he gave her.
Lord Akeldama became a source of information for Alexia Tarabotti, much to the horror of her family and friends. He was the first one she chose to call on after the Westminster Hive invited her over because she didn't wish to go in blind. She also called again on him once people started trying to kill her, wanting to be at a safe place the night of the full moon as any werewolves attached to BUR would be unable to help. This was also when the Hypocras Club decided to abduct Lord Akeldama for one of their experiments. He was nearly killed in process, saved in the nick of time by Alexia, Lord Maccon, and a group of his drones who managed to figure out "the players" of "the game" and broke into the Hypocras Club, which allowed Lord Akeldama to feed in order to regain his strength and heal.
After Alexia's wedding to Lord Maccon, she called on Lord Akeldama to see if he had any knowledge of the sudden humanization occurring in London, using the opportunity introduce him the "hat maker" Madame Lefoux, an inventor. Posed with an inventor in his house, Lord Akeldama took the opportunity to show off his brand new, state of art aethographer, which allowed for long distance messages to be sent. It was this aethographer that allowed them to relay information to and from Scotland including him attempting to provide an answer which was not understood until later and letting them know that the aethographer belonging to the Westminster Hive - which had a spy in Lady Maccon's household - had "conveniently" broken, meaning they had not received the spy's message about what was causing "the plague" which would have put Alexia's life in danger even more.
When Alexia sought refuge at Lord Akeldama's following being kicked out of her husband's house, she found him and his drones gone, save for "Boots". Lord Akeldama had been forced to swarm by the potentate (a vampire on the government's Shadow Council) when his favorite drone and lover Biffy was kidnapped. Lord Akeldama returned to find Lyall with Biffy at BUR, Biffy having been turned to a werewolf to save his life. Lord Akeldama was not pleased by this in the least, first yelling at Lyall when the beta said Biffy was lucky, saying that he was better off dead than being turned to a werewolf and cursed to become a beast every full moon. He then attempted to strangle Lyall, Biffy stopping him when he woke. Lord Akeldama again attempted to push the point when Queen Victoria came to investigate the killing of potentate during the act of saving Biffy. When Lord Akeldama stated angrily at the Queen congratulating Biffy on his successful transformation "he is mine", the Queen pointed out that he had many more drones.
Lord Akeldama was finally able to answer the question of why the vampires wanted to kill Alexia and her unborn child. The Queen appointed him potentate, an unusual move since the potentate is a position usually voted upon by hives. And in response to Lyall's request as a way to try and appease the vampires so they wouldn't kill Alexia or her child, he began to turn his second best closet into a nursery...
Personality:
"Outrageous was a very good way of describing Lord Akeldama."
While he follows the overarching societal rules, one will never be able to claim that Lord Akeldama conforms to any such protocols beyond the extent that he wants.
The first thing that one will notice about Lord Akeldama is his vanity and his over concern with fashion and clothing, including expressing regret a jacket had been ruined in the middle of a dangerous situation. Always with foppishness and flamboyance, he is dressed in the height of fashion even if it is outlandish in color, pattern, and combination of the two. Even his home is presented with brilliance, nothing humble about it. From the gilded ceilings, statues, and the lavender painted exterior and flowers that he can never actually see in the light of day, everything has to be just perfect.
His vanity and sense of perfection extends to his many drones, who are called "dandies of the highest order" who make sure themselves, their master, and others always look their best, including Lord Maccon who was noted that if he has trousers and a shirt on, he considers himself dressed.
His vanity even extends to an extreme. Vampires as a whole are allergic to citrus; however, Lord Akeldama is seen taking lemon in his tea and uses lemon scented perfumes on occasion. Biffy reveals he has deliberately built up a tolerance to lemon solely because he likes to use lemon in his hair.
He has a flair for flowery language, giving those he has some affection for a endearment, typically flowers or food - darling, tea biscuit, blooming marigold, and lilac bush being examples of ones he has used towards Alexia specifically. Soon after meeting Alexia he started calling her by her first name, unheard of, because he JUST knew they would be friends. He also speaks the second language of italics, taking great care in emphasizing just the right word.
For the most part, he would do anything to help a friend, even offering Alexia his second and his third best closets - the third best being the size of Alexia's entire bedroom at Woolsey Castle. This is of course at great personal sacrifice.
An interesting point about Lord Akeldama's character is that for a vampire he is open to change. Even young vampires become set in their ways very quickly, including ones only decades into being a vampire. Lord Akeldama is still able evolve with the times quickly. An auditory disruptor device, a state of the art aethograph, the eventual dirigible outfitted with weaponry mainly for his drones (which is called "Dandelion fluff upon a spoon" by the way), the rather forward thinking belief that women are worth educating and can be more than just wives, he is a part of it all. He even provides patronage to inventors such as Madame Lefoux, showing a support of furthering change and advancements in technology.
His own nature is not beneath descending to new depths.
Beneath this flowery surface, Lord Akeldama is a very shrewd vampire. He has lived a long time, and lived a long time in a relatively vulnerable state - being a hiveless vampire - despite the strength it takes for a vampire to break away from his hive. Roves as a whole are considered dangerous by society for their rejection of the hive and he is not on good terms with Countess Nadasdy, the local hive queen. And while Lord Akeldama states that he became a rove to do what he wanted, he still follows enough to toe the line of societal acceptance, keeping himself as "eccentric" and hard to forget, thus adding a modicum of security in his visibility among daylight folk.
But if there is one thing that Lord Akeldama likes more than fashion, it is information. This is the job of his drones, associates of drones, and those who receive his patronage who aren't offered drone status - most likely women in the majority. In fact, he has agents around the world reporting back to him. Alexia often wonders how Lord Akeldama comes about his information so fast, only the next day knowing she had been the one to kill the vampire when her name and that it was a vampire had been kept out of the papers. It is pointed out that his drones specifically blend in to parties, either making themselves inconspicuous or potentially feigning a state where others will think they won't overhear anything, such as inebriation. Agatha Woosmoss - whom he was supporting and buying dresses - was stated to be dressed in fashion, but still be forgettable.
This seems to be more of a sense of security for Lord Akeldama. By hoarding information, it is impossible for anyone to be sure what Lord Akeldama and his drones know and don't know. Lord Akeldama likes having information but rarely uses it, another sign it is for security's sake.
Alexia also states that Lord Akeldama claims to only visit the best of locales; however, it has also been stated that Lord Akeldama will never send a drone some place he wouldn't go and has not been himself. Biffy, for example, was seen by Lord Maccon appearing dressed in tiptop fashion "out of the darkness behind a brewing pub, where no toff had a right to be," comfortable enough there to go in and get a navy man to give up his cloak for Lord Maccon, who was in a state of indecency at the time. Given what has been said previously about Lord Akeldama, this says something for his character as well.
Paranoia also abounds with Lord Akeldama. One of his "boys" sent him an auditory disruption device which prevents others from listening in from a distance, which he uses with frequency, indicating he thinks others will be listening to him. He also has the latest in aethographers. Fancy thing that it is, it does not require a valve to send a messages to other aethographers, but it also occasionally picks up signals meant for others. An unfortunate side effect for Lord Akeldama? Or an unexpected benefit?
Lord Akeldama likes to be in control of the situation, but sometimes for all of his information gathering he's left in the dark. He is bothered by situations where he doesn't know the answer with some valid reasoning since one time he didn't nearly gets him killed by the Hypocras Club. But most notably is when Biffy is abducted and turned. Rather than being grateful Biffy is still with them, he insults werewolves as a whole - "Lucky? To be cursed by the moon to be a slathering beast? You would have done better to let him die." - and attempts to strangle Lyall.
He also loses his trademark second language of italics when he's angry or being serious. As pointed out by his adopted daughter, Rue, another trademark when he becomes angry is that he begins to slip back into his original accent, which - being an educated girl - she is able to determine is Ancient Greek.
Lord Akeldama is sarcastic, choosing to troll others whenever he can, including his own friends. He is the type that if someone wore a wrinkled cravat, he would cuttingly point it out and make sure others knew it too, but he would do it with all polite words. When Alexia's sister is in his house, he pretends not to realize she is there or remember her because - as Alexia states - Lord Akeldama likes drama, even if he has to create it himself. He also asks if everything okay because Felicity happens to be wearing a dress of such inferior fashion. Perhaps partially as an insult - from the aforementioned issues regarding Biffy - it began, but it has not changed, he refers to Professor Randolph Lyall as "Dolly" starting with that interaction, but not before.
Abilities:
Superhuman speed - vampires are stated on many occasions in the books as being faster than humans when they want to use their abilities. It is implied the naked eye is unable or has difficult tracking them at full speed
Supernatural healing - vampires are hard to permanently injure. They can take just about all injuries and will heal in minutes to hours depending on the severity provided they are not starved at the time of injury. Starvation increases the time it takes to heal. Injury by wooden weapons also increase healing time and can be fatal to vampires.
Blood sucking - vampires get no nourishment from "mortal" food. While some may eat because they enjoy the taste, but it does nothing for them. However, cultured vampires such as Lord Akeldama don't go around biting willy-nilly; they want a willing donor, usually one of their many drones.
